What’s the difference between 740 and 760?
The 740 is the mass-market version with the 4-cylinder Red Block engines; the 760 was the flagship with the PRV V6 or D24T diesel, plus more luxurious trim. Both share the same body shell and this manual covers both.
Is the Red Block B230 reliable?
Legendary. The Red Block is one of the most durable engines Volvo ever built — frequently exceeding 300,000+ miles with basic maintenance. Timing belt service at the factory interval is the one non-negotiable.
What’s the PRV V6 story?
Peugeot-Renault-Volvo joint-venture V6 used in the 760 (and in DeLorean, Renault Alpine, and others). Not as bulletproof as the Red Block but well-documented. Head valve-seat wear is a known issue on early examples — covered in this manual.
Is the D24T diesel worth keeping?
It’s mechanically interesting (VW-sourced inline-6) but head-gasket prone. If the head gasket hasn’t been addressed, budget for that. Full head-gasket procedure is in the manual.
